Idea for two stories
The first: The Way Baristas Are. A Starbucks barista talks about the job, complains, etc.
The second: The Way Baristas Should Be. The barista doesn't even talk; the actions are merely described. The making and serving of coffee beverages is an intense physical feat, requiring both endurance and coordination. Baristas do not apply, nor even audition, just happen, a force of (un)nature materializing out of the cosmos. Every Starbucks has one, their heads slightly bowed as they prepare drinks to the beat of whatever is playing on their earbud headphones. Watching them is enough to mystify customers into a purchase, and no one at the tables can concentrate enough to talk. The baristas themselves barely notice that their job is happening: the order is scribbled on the cup in a code before it's handed to them, and they simply incorporate it into the routine. They don't talk, wave, smile, or see; they just move, just breathe, just do what they're there to do. And they're damn good at it. When they're done, they just slink out of the store, still gently bobbing to their own rhythm. The conversations start up again, the customers return to normal, drinks in hand. The baristas have done their job.
